Afterwards, each oocyte undergoes intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) , meaning that the selected sperm is injected inside the egg.

By this way the sperm does not need to attach the outer shell of the egg and no need for biochemical reactions for passing the outer part of the egg called zona pellucida. This technique enables men to become fathers even if they have very low sperm counts (male infertility). On the other hand, if the number of oocytes is very low,  intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a better option for achieving fertliization.
